Spending Time With God- A Journaling Resource

Do you ever feel overwhelmed when reading the Bible? Do you stop before you even get a chance to open the Book? I can totally relate. I used to read A TON of Bible studies to help guide me. They helped me to understand the context and the facts, but I still felt as if something was missing. I didn't understand WHO God is.

People always explained, "the Holy Spirit will guide you.”  AND HE WILL! But sometimes I felt like I just could not hear Him. That maybe He wasn't in me and I was missing out on what EVERYONE else seemed to have. It felt as though I was doing too much, overwhelming myself, and missing what He was trying to tell me. Have you ever felt this way?

Please know there are multiple reasons why we sometimes don’t hear the gentle leading of the Holy Spirit, but for me, during this season- there was something that God wanted to show me.

My relationship with God really changed when I started exploring the character of God. His very nature. I found myself falling in love with a Merciful, Faithful, Provider, who would always be around to protect me. I realized within the context of the Bible stories, He is my Safe Place, my Strength, my Healer, and the list goes on.  Then the Holy Spirit began to guide me to search endlessly for who He is (character/nature), what He expects me to do, and how to apply it to my life. I started using these questions as my guidelines. This changed how I studied the Bible. This changed my relationship with God. The Holy Spirit opened my eyes to see what was important for that season. He wanted me to just KNOW our Father.

As I share this strategy with you, please know that there is no formula or 5 step rule to know God. Journaling this way works for me, but it doesn’t mean it will be the end stop for you. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide your time with Him. I share only because we have to start somewhere. I know sometimes it feels overwhelming, so we just don’t do it. It’s so much easier to turn on Netflix or scroll through Instagram or Facebook than dive into the Word of God. So it seems...

I don’t always use this method, but on days when I just feel overwhelmed, I go back to being still and KNOWING that He is God {Psalm 46:10}.

In my last post, I explained how I learned quickly to apply the unspoken rules of building a relationship with people and use them with God; Finding a place to spend time with Him and pursuing His heart. As I began to search the scripture for God's heart and character, I found myself falling in love with who He is. Now, when things happen in my life, I know when it is my Father. I know without hesitation that He is good. The enemy can not deceive me because I know my Father's voice and the voice of a stranger I will not follow.

I pray this journal printout will guide you in your time with the Lord. I pray that it may open your eyes to see God like you’ve never seen Him before. That you may know that through His word He pursues us. May you understand because of Jesus Christ we have a direct connection to the Father.
