Like most of the world, my heart has been held captive watching the news and social media feeds regarding what’s been happening in the world lately. I found myself one night yelling at the TV and trying to calm myself when I felt all the anger rising up in my heart.

I couldn’t hold back the endless streams of tears because we live in a world that’s hurting and broken. Everyone has such strong opinions, so we aren’t listening to the struggles of someone else. We aren’t sensitive to the fact that everyone views things a little different. Most people are more concerned with being “right” than showing love. We all have some level of hurt or anger or hate (maybe all 3) that have been taught to us. When you are rooted in hurt, anger, and hate why would your actions reflect anything else?

I found myself crying out to God wondering if He is so disgusted by His children if He is ready to throw in the towel. And then I remembered the stories found in the Bible. Those of a fallen world that was in need of a savior and Lord. A world that required a humble God to live amongst His people, to be the ultimate sacrifice for all the sin that would follow in this world. I remembered that we serve a God that is full of grace and mercy. And that no matter what the news may say or what we may see, our God is still in control.

Sometimes we are our own worst enemy. Sometimes we are unable to let ourselves be free from the lies that the true enemy is saying to us. You see, we are fighting a battle that we were not designed to fight because the enemy has already been defeated. We are fighting against the people that we are called to love when we should be fighting against the thoughts and spirits that have been passed down from generation to generation. We are fighting a war that requires no physical weapon but prayer, love, and faith that God will guide His children. The freedom that Christ offers is here today on this earth AND eternal.

Freedom was first won at the cross. Freedom lives within those who believe. Freedom is being able to love those that need it the most knowing it’s usually the people that are the hardest to love. Freedom is when you can turn the cheek to someone who has wronged you. Freedom is when you can be different from this world. Freedom is when you can express love and vulnerability. Freedom is being okay with your shortcomings because you know that God’s power is made perfect in our weakness. Freedom is moving forward and doing things out of love and not for selfish motivation. Freedom is following the Father, the one that has given us His Freedom. Freedom is available for those who choose to open their hearts enough to hear the truth without taking offense. Freedom is surrendering our will to God's.

Freedom is….Jesus.

"Because of the sacrifice of the Messiah, His blood poured out on the altar of the Cross, we're a free people- free of penalties and punishments chalked up by all our misdeeds. And not just barely free, either. Abundantly free! He thought of everything, provided for everything we could possibly need, letting us in on the plans He took such delight in making. He set it all out before us in Christ, a long-range plan in which everything would be brought together and summed up in Him, everything in deepest heaven, everything on planet earth." (Ephesians 1:7-10, MSG)

For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. (2 Corinthians 3:17, NLT)

Until next time pray for true freedom in this country...
